Introduction to School of Science

School of Science was established in 2002 based on the former Basic Courses Department. The school has three undergraduate majors, Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering (Optical Information Science and Technology, Information Display and Optoelectronic Technology), Information and Computing Science and Applied Statistics. The school has one first-level master degree program of Optical Engineering, and three second-level master degree programs including Physical Electronics, Science and Technology of Photoelectric Material, and Optimization Theory and Process Control.

The school has six Teaching and Research Offices: Optoelectronic Information Science and Engineering, Information and Computing Science, Applied Statistics, Advanced Mathematics, Algebraic Geometry and Physics, as well as two experimental teaching centers of Physical Experiments and Professional Experiments. The school has a tactful teaching team who has rigorous scholarship and with a broad research field. They undertake the teaching task of the university-wide basic courses, such as mathematics, physics and physical experiments and their relevant courses for all undergraduate students and graduate students.

Now the school has 876 undergraduate students and 19 postgraduate students, Staff members are 92, among which 85 are full-time teachers, including 38 professors and associate professors. 16 of them have doctor degrees and 53 have master degrees. There are 2 provincial distinguished teachers, 2 university-level distinguished teachers and 3 university-level excellent chief course teachers. There is one provincial excellent teaching team. Among the young teachers, 2 of them were awarded the title as Shenyang Teaching Model, 2 of them got the title as Shenyang Teaching Expert. 4 teachers in our school gained support from the project of Supporting Plan for Excellent Talents in University in Liaoning Province, and 3 of them were granted “May 1st Labor Medals.”

The school laboratories, covering an area of 2750 square meters, host 1660 sets of experimental instruments and equipment with a total value of over RMB12 million. The school has one national-level Sino-Russian Scientific and Technological Cooperation Base —Sino-Russian Joint Laboratory of Laser Technology, Key Laboratory of Liaoning Provincial Laser and Optical Information Technology, Liaoning Provincial Teaching Demonstration Center of Physics and Optical Information Technology, Shenyang Laser Spectroscopy Engineering Laboratory, and Shenyang Ligong University-Liaoning Science Education Practice Base of Laser Science and Technology Industrial Park. Based on the subjects of Optical Engineering, Physical Electronics, Science and Technology of Photoelectric Materials, these laboratories focus on the research of laser spectroscopy and optical detection technology, laser technology and photoelectric detection technology, science and technology of optoelectronic materials, as well as liquid crystal optics and liquid crystal devices and so on. Adhering to the collaborative innovation in the field of photoelectric technology application, the laboratories have become the base for important scientific research and cultivating talents to serve the development of ordnance characteristics in our university.

n terms of talent cultivation, the school has set up its educational objectives to cultivate advanced applicable science talents with a solid foundation in mathematics and physics and a strong innovation spirit and practical ability. In practice, the school actively carries out extracurricular scientific and technological activities, among which mathematical modeling is a main activity. Conducted by the teachers of the School of Science, the representative teams of mathematical modeling of our university have participated in many mathematical modeling contests at the international, national and provincial levels, and in which 16 students won the international awards, 25 students won the national awards, and 140 students won the provincial awards.

Scientific research

Based on optical engineering, physical electronics, science and technology for optoelectronic materials , as well as information statistics and computing science, the School of Science focuses its work on the research of laser spectroscopy and optical detection technology, laser technology and optoelectronic detection technology, optoelectronic materials science and technology.

The school adheres to the collaborative innovation in the field of photoelectric technology, developing munitions industry, cooperating with Russia in science and technology, to meet the requirements of Liaoning and the whole country. The main research directions of the school include:

A. Research on laser detection technology: For the application of laser technology in military and civilian areas, the key scientific research will be carried out in the fields of laser ranging, detection and tracking technology, the development of new laser device and high precision quantum measurement. The specific research directions are as follows:

  • a. Research on the technology of laser ranging and photoelectric tracking
  • b. Study on high-power solid laser and tunable liquid crystal laser device
  • c. Theoretical and experimental studies on quantum key distribution

B. Research on laser spectrum technology: For the application of laser spectroscopy technology in the fields of environmental protection, security and biomedicine, the research will be carried out in laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Laser spectrum detection of weak signals. The specific research directions are as follows:

  • a. Research on enhancement mechanism and enhancement technology of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS)
  • b. Research on early diagnosis technology of cancer based on the Raman spectra of serum and saliva
  • c. Research on laser Raman spectrum detection technology based on pesticides and dangerous products

C. Research on optical detection technology: For the needs of industrial products, the research will be carried out in non-contact detection technology, endoscopic optical imaging system and adaptive optics wavefront correction technology using optical sensing, imaging and information processing technology.

  • a. Research and development of inspection system of turning shaft parts
  • b. Research on laser sensor detection technology
  • c. Research on optical imaging detection system

D. Optimization theory and process control: Computer and automation technology are used as tools and means to analyze, describe and solve complex system optimization problems and control problems, and provide theoretical basis for the design, management and optimization of various systems.

  • a. Advanced control theory and its application
  • b. Process optimization and control of industrial process
  • c. Online control and process optimization of complex system

In the last three years, the school has undertaken more than 30 transverse scientific research projects and over 50 scientific research projects, including the projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National 863 program projects, military academy of pre-research projects and provincial scientific research projects. The total research funding is up to about RMB 6 million. The school has won a second-prize of science and technology from China Ordnance Society, a second-prize of science and technology advancement in Liaoning Province, a third-prize of science and technology advancement in Shenyang City, and 10 natural science awards in Liaoning Province. Twenty invention patents and utility model patents were granted and the number of published research papers totals more than 100 with SCI or EI index.

Academic exchange

Extensive exchanges and cooperation at home and abroad has been developed in our school. We established a scientific cooperation and academic exchange relationship with domestic and foreign colleges, universities and scientific research units. A joint laser technology laboratory was established with the Institute of High Current Electronics of Russian Academy of Sciences. We invite Russian experts to the laboratory for academic exchange activities every year and our teachers related to the research in the laboratory go to Russia to carry out academic exchanges as well. In the last 4 years, 9 experts from Russian Academy of Sciences have been invited to carry out scientific research work. The teachers in our school have completed 3 international cooperation projects with the experts from Russia. We also focus on the cooperation and exchanges between industry and school, for which some industry-study union bases with The CLP Group, China Electric Division Group 53, Changchun Boxin Photoelectric Technology Company, Anshan Laser Industrial Park, etc. has been established to carry out joint training of students, technology research, transformation and application of scientific achievements. In the last four years, the school has organized 3 international conferences like “China-Russian optical and electronic information science international conference” and so on.

A. The major of Optoelectronic Information Science & Engineering

Introduction

The major aims at training engineering science talents with high quality, innovative consciousness, practical ability and broad basic knowledge in optoelectronic information science and engineering. At the same time, they should also have high qualities in moral, culture, professional dedication, social responsibility, a healthy physique and good psychological quality. The students of this major should have a broad theoretical foundation, a solid foundation of professional knowledge and proficiency in experimental skills in different research areas of optoelectronic information science and engineering (optoelectronic direction, photoelectric information direction, and optical direction and optoelectronic materials), and have a basic ability to analyze and solve engineering problems by using the theory and technology of optical science. To meet the requirements of photoelectric industry, the major focuses on developing the knowledge structure of the combination of theory and engineering, and the combination of optics and electronics based on solid mathematical foundation. The major aims at strengthening the students’ practical ability, highlighting their design ability of new laser device, optical system, and optical material and device.

B. The major of Application of Statistics

Introduction

Based on the education idea of “strengthening solid foundation, paying attention to practical ability, cultivating ability and developing innovation spirit”, the major aims to train applicable innovative talents with team work spirit and practical ability who can meet the needs of social economic and scientific and technological development, systematically grasp statistical theory and the practice method, carry on deep-going research on big data, carry on quantitative analysis on the social and economic problems using the data analysis technique. The graduates will be able to engage in the development and consulting work on statistical information in the public administration departments, enterprises and institutions, or do teaching and scientific research work in research institutions and educational departments.

To improve the students’ data processing and statistics analyzing ability, we have set up a perfect theoretical teaching system. To strengthen the students’ innovative consciousness and practical ability, we have developed “Training system for innovation and practical ability”.

C. The major of Information & Computing Science

Introduction

Information and Computing Sciences, as a science major, is formed by interpenetration and integration of information science, computing science, operational research and control science. The major has set up its education objectives of training professional science talents with practical ability and comprehensive development in moral, intelligence, sports and good understanding of the basic theory, basic knowledge and basic methods of information science and computing science, who have strong ability of mathematical modeling, computer programming, computer software applications, innovative entrepreneurship. The graduates will be excelled in the fields of scientific computing, software development, data processing and database management in scientific research departments, design institutes, and IT enterprises.

Shenyang Ligong University formally began to take in undergraduates of information and computing science in 2002. The major has developed its own professional features as “Meeting the requirements of the IT industries, strengthening students’ mathematical foundation, improving their ability of mathematical modeling, algorithm design and analysis ability”. The major focuses on the cultivation of the applied science talents based on the advantages of its stronger mathematical foundation and multidiscipline crossing. The process of the cultivation of students is closely combined with our university’s personnel training mode of “Improving students’ design ability and training their practical ability”.
