School of Material Science & Engineering

General Information

The School of Material Science and Engineering was founded as the Department of Metal Hot-forming in 1985. However, students began to enroll in 1978. There are currently 7 departments in the school, including the Department of Foundry Engineering (Casting Engineering), the Department of Plastic Forming and Molding, the Department of Welding Technology and Engineering, the Department of Metallic Material Engineering, the Department of Polymer Materials and Engineering, the Department of Inorganic Non-metallic Material Engineering and the Department of Powder Material Science and Engineering. Apart from that, the Institute of Biological Materials and the Experimental Centre of Material Science and Engineering were also established in the School. The undergraduates’ disciplines include Material Forming and Control Engineering, Metallic Material Engineering, Polymer Materials and Engineering, Inorganic Non-metallic Material Engineering and Powder Material Science and Engineering. Among all of the disciplines, the program of Material Forming and Control Engineering was recognized as the Provincial Model Program. Recently, the program of Powder Material Science and Engineering was granted the title of the Key Constructive Discipline of Liaoning Province.

One first-grade discipline, Material Science and Engineering, as well as three second-grade disciplines including Material Physics and Chemistry, Material Science and Materials Processing Engineering was set up in the School of Material Science and Engineering. There is also a Master’s discipline of Engineering, known as Material Engineering. The Sino-Russian International Cooperation Foundation of Ministry of Science and Technology was established in the School. Moreover, several research and teaching platforms of provincial and/or ministerial level, such as the Key Laboratory of Liaoning Provincial Metallic Materials advanced Processing and Technology, the Demonstration and Teaching Centre of Materials Processing and Performance Testing of Liaoning Province Department of Education, the Engineering Practice and Education centre of College Students of Liaoning Province, were founded in the School. Meanwhile, 5 experimental platforms, i.e. Material Basic Experiments, Synthesis and preparation of Materials, Materials Processing, Materials Analysis and Materials Digital Technology were founded in the Experimental Centre of Material Science and Engineering. The existing laboratory covers an area of 3800 square meters and the tangible values exceed 20 million Chinese Yuan.

The current faculty includes 76 members, including 20 professors, 36 associate professors and 6 senior engineers, among which there are 2 doctoral supervisors, 33 master supervisors, 41 doctors and 20 masters. Among them, there are specialists awarded the State Council Special Post allowance, National Outstanding Lecturers, members of Ministry of Education Teaching Instruction Commission on Inorganic Non-metallic Materials, the members of Policy Advisory Commission of Liaoning Provincial Government, and Provincial Outstanding Lecturers, etc. There are 1802 full-time undergraduate students and 128 graduate students currently studying in the School.

In terms of the research, we have really multidisciplinary areas of investigations, such as advanced liquid molding technology, advanced plastic forming technology, advanced welding structure technology and simulation technology, high energy beam and plasma surface processing technology, strengthening and toughening of materials, inorganic non-metallic materials, structure and properties of polymers, as well as advanced construction materials. Over the past decade, the School of Material Science and Engineering undertakes almost a hundred of projects, including National 973 Project, National Natural Science Foundation of China, key projects of international cooperation of Ministry of Science and Technology, as well as science projects of Liaoning Province and City of Shenyang. Over one thousand peer-reviewed publications have been published, of which more than one hundred have been retrieved by SCI, EI and/or ISTP. Furthermore, there are also more than 11 provincial-level and/or ministerial-level Teaching Awards granted.

2、Green construction materials and high performance composites

  • 2.1 The basic study of the application of the low-temperature and foaming concrete materials and the technique promotion of the green novel wall construction materials
  • 2.2 The basic study of the application of the ceramic matrix and polymer-based composites and the industrialization technology of engineering materials.

Materials Forming & Control Engineering

Materials Forming and Control Engineering covers directions of casting, plastic forming and mold as well as welding. The program aims at developing students’ engineering design, practice and creativity capabilities in fields of mechanical engineering and material science. Students taking this program will be trained to be engineers of technology, manufacture and management.

Metallic Material Engineering

Staffs in the Department of Metallic Material Engineering undertake the task of lecturing specialized core courses to students majoring in Metallic Material Engineering and Material Shaping and Control Engineering, as well as students of School of Mechanical Engineering and School of Automobile and Transportation. Their research mainly involves heat treatment and surface modification of metallic materials as well as the design of the heat treatment furnace.

The department of Polymer Material and Engineering aims to cultivate hands-on talents of being capable in synthesis, processing and application of polymer materials. After four-year systematical study, students should have the ability to be engaged in production or management in the polymer material industry, the petrochemical industry and the equipment manufacturing industry etc.

Inorganic Non-metallic Material Engineering

The department of Inorganic Non-metallic Material Engineering was founded with the purpose of bringing up advanced hands-on talents with strong ability of engineering practice. Graduates are expected to master systematically the knowledge based upon inorganic non-metallic material processing design and properties detection of products. Meanwhile, basic foreign languages abilities and computer skills are also key points of the training.

Powder Material Science and Engineering

The department of Powder Material Science and Engineering was founded with the view to train students for advanced hands-on talents being capable in engineering design, engineering practice and engineering innovation. Graduates are expected to have the knowledge based upon Material Engineering and to master systematically the basic theory, experimental skills as well as scientific and innovative methodology of Powder Material Science and Engineering.
